Summary/Abstract: The paper presents an analysis of the common reality of the Bulgarians in the pre-modern age - those variations of the sense of collective belonging called by Eric Hobsbaum "popular proto-nationalism". The emphasis is put on the status quo in the spheres of religion and language as well as on the aspects into which those factors influenced the emerging national identity formation.
