Summary/Abstract: One of the most interesting phenomena in the cultural life of the former SFR Yugoslavia, then the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, then Serbia and Montenegro, and then divided states of Serbia and Montenegro was the issue of inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations. Yugoslavia disintegrated because of unresolved inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations. In this context, a particularly important fact is the question of relations of the Muslim’s part of the population toward the values which formed the state of South Slave peoples. Modern Serbia and Montenegro were created as a result of the struggle with Islamic-Ottoman caliphate and Sultanate, because of this the question of the status of Islam and Muslims is one of the most important issues in this complex of relations. Our Muslims during the rule of Ottoman sultanate were part of the ruling order, and they are the main carriers of the oppression of the Orthodox population. That’s why it was very difficult to find a common denominator which can gather Muslims around the idea of living together with the Orthodox . For their cultural values and political identity were tied to the occupiers of their own country – to the Ottoman Empire. History of our Muslim is inseparable from the history of the Ottoman caliphate and sultanate. Ottoman sultanate for the Orthodox is the source of all evil. That’s why real history could hardly be taught. Therefore, its rearrangement is performed. The Ottoman Empire was presented as the Turkish nation-state which subdued and oppressed Serbian nation. When referring in that way, it was easy to find a common denominator, because the Serbs - Muslims are not Turks.
