Summary/Abstract: The author reflects on the impact of sociology of knowledge during its 80 years of existence. He points out that this invention of Max Scheller has established new view on relations between knowledge, culture and society. It also rebuilt the whole philosophical discourse and created the basis for a nonfoundational theory of knowledge. In effect, new orientations have been born in many neighbouring fields of knowledge; e.g. in epistemology, in methodology of social science, in sociology of science or in anthropology. The greatest impact of sociology of knowledge has been observed within sociology of science as demonstrated by different forms of constructivism. The strong programme of sociology of knowledge has addressed crucial questions concerning the limits of social determination of knowledge and discussion around its thesis opened new perspectives in social science. Although sociology of knowledge is still far from a systematic codification it has forced scientists and philosophers to confront the problem of a contextual character of knowledge.
