Summary/Abstract: The paper constitutes a polemics with the category of objective possibility, perceived by Max Weber as an important complement of his thoughts o ideal type theory and an introduction to the Verstehen theory. Weber's views on the subject are expressed in "Kritische Studien auf dem Gebiet der kulturwissenschaftlichen Logik" in the chapter "Objektive Möglichkeit und adäquate Verursachung in der historischen Kausalbetrachtung". The a posteriori research method puts the scientist on a level with an individual subject immersed in a specific constellation of events; my paper investigates the consequences of such a position. An ability (formal, material and subjective) to predict results, linked with a disposition to act, combine to render the method of objective possibility insufficient as a cognitive method. Thus we return to the classical dilemma whether, using the method of objective possibility, should we treat social order as a product of the historical researcher's rationalization, or should we believe that the order of social reality is inherent to reality itself, and our method is merely an attempt to reveal and embrace this order.
