Summary/Abstract: The change in economic situation as well as shifts in social life determine alterations in organizations. Any kind of activities become increasingly complex and require more coordination as well as diverse knowledge. Changes in the environment and technologies have determined not only alterations within the structures of organizations but also in fundamental sciences. For a long time, communication and information sciences did not have the status of an independent branch of science and were attributed to other branches and fields of science. Current changes have created conditions for the development of communication and information sciences. Transformations in management models are driven by challenges of knowledge society as well as knowledge economy. The management of valuable, rare, difficult to replicate competence resources of an organization form the prospects based on knowledge resources. Knowledge management as an individual theoretic conception has developed recently. This is one of the newest management paradigms and research objects. It is especially relevant for knowledge economy, it is becoming increasingly predominant, and that dictates new rules for organizations. The management of inner as well as outer information flows within organizations is not sufficient to gain a long-term competitive advantage. The main factors for creation of effective management strategies for business organizations are organization training and knowledge management. The relation between the conceptions of information management and knowledge management is a sphere of new theoretic discussions. The aim of the article is to reveal the place of information and knowledge management within the system of information and communication sciences; to show the links of information and knowledge management; to discuss the changes of management activities driven by the expression of knowledge-based economy.
