Summary/Abstract: One of the characteristic features of peripheral regions is a regular migration outflow to nodal areas, defined – because of migration selectivity – as “backwash” process of labour resources. The low level of development of peripheral areas functions as a “push” stimulus for young educated people. On the other hand the outflow of such worthy resource, connected with different kind of capitals (social, economic), limits to high extent the chances for the development of peripheral regions in the future. The aim of this paper is to present links between demographic situation and possibilities of overcoming peripherality on the example of European problem region, which is Eastern Poland.
