Summary/Abstract: The attitude of Pope Pius XII towards the ,,Jewish Problem” during the Second World War was and still remains a controversial subject. By presenting a series of events when, with the encouragement and support of Pope Pius XII, Catholic churchmen and institutions saved a considerable number of Jews, this paper aims to remove the negative image that has been built around the Pope. Moreover, our main argument is that taking in account that every time Nazism was attacked or condemned, the National Socialists responded by retaliation, Pope Pius shall not be accused of silence and indifference. We think that refraining from taking a public stand against the Nazi regime and its persecutions was a clever strategy of Pope Pius XII, who succeeded to save 860,000 Jewish lives.
