Summary/Abstract: This paper is included in the paradigm of Mauss and the institution of symbolism that looks at gender as a transversal dimension of the contemporary couple. The author presents some results of her doctoral work on the unmarried couple. This is a qualitative study based on nearly a hundred interviews with young couples living outside marriage in Bucharest and Marseille. From the analysis of the metamorphosis of contemporary conjugal relationship, this paper shows how the representations, practices and values include the issues of gender equality at the time of thinning.
