Summary/Abstract: Engraving workshop of the Marine printing house started its work in St. Petersburg in 1722. It was among the so-called departmental institutions, working first of all for the needs of the Navy. Throughout the 18th century it produced engraved maps, atlases and other publications necessary for the Russian Navy and for the training of seafarers. In spite of a purely practical nature, each map master turned into a real work of art, decorating it with vignettes and cartouches.
