A Hidden Dimension: Digital Media, Memory and Time

Summary/Abstract: In this article Nowak explores the experience and understanding of time in the era of digital media. Taking retromania as an example, he suggests that a closer analysis of this phenomenon allows us to uncover new media’s unique qualities, which have tended to elude researchers’ attention. According to Nowak, an analysis of retromania leads to conclusions that can be helpful in the study of digital media in general. His point of departure is a critique of research on the media’s social and cultural dimension. He then proposes the notion of the retreat of time, as time is suspended and flattened in the digital media.
