Summary/Abstract: To reconstruct Virginia Woolf’s ‘rescue theory of the self,’ Sendyka focuses on the con¬cept of the self in two novels, namely Orlando (1928) and The Waves (1931). Woolf re¬sponds to the modern problem of split or non-centralized consciousness, exploring how in this situation a sense of identity can be maintained. To understand the functioning and coexistance of many selves, Sendyka proposes the nostion of the scene, or rather performance. Erika Fischer-Lichte’s theory of performativity, especially the concept of the ‘autopoietic feedback loop’ allows to better grasp the course of internal relations between ‘multiple consciousnesses’ as staged by Woolf. Another useful notion is Hum¬berto Maturana’s theory of autopoiesis, also used by Fischer-Lichte. What is at stake for Woolf is an understanding of the self as a being that is multiple or ‘most differentiated’ and unified at the same time.
