Summary/Abstract: To understand the way ecclesiastic authorities would define the Catholic newspaper at the beginning of the 20th century we refer to a volume where this matter was tackled: Il giornale cattolico. Criteri e norme (1913) by Jesuit Giuseppe Chiaudano. The author synthetized the manner in which the concept of Catholic journalism was understood in that period, when it also expressed the official position of the Church regarding the concerned topic. The paper contains nine short dialogues and an appendix. The main personage was a priest, don Eusebio, who would try to clarify the doubts of his two nephews (lawyer Mario and engineer Alessandro) regarding the Catholic journalism. The appendix included a letter of the State Secretary (cardinal Merry del Val) where the latter would thank him for the receipt of the book (which he had praised on behalf of the Holy Father), a letter of the Pope’s to the Lombard bishopric and an open letter to the marquis Filippo Crispolti, with the title Due tipi di giornalismo cattolico?. Practically, through these references, the volume was confirmed by the Holy See – the supreme authority of the Catholic Church, which would decide in the end, which had to be the conception of the Church on the press and which was the role of publications within it, and also within the society.
