Summary/Abstract: The author of this article investigates the activity of a few high architects and land surveyors in Kishinev and considers the main trends of architectural development of Bessarabia during the first half of the 19th century. This was the most important and culminating stage of the classicism. Well-known architect from St. Petersburg Avraam Melnikov built the Cathedral of the Birth of Jesus and the three-tiered belfry during 1830–1836. In 1838–1839 new bells were cast using as raw material Turkish guns. Later in 1839–1841 according to the project of the talented architect Luka Zaushckevich from Odessa the Triumph Arch or Saint Gate was erected there. It became a beautiful addition to this architectural monument in the center of the city of Kishinev.
