Summary/Abstract: In the 18th century the population of Europe increased very much. Generally speaking, the number of inhabitants in the entire Europe doubled and for cities one can speak of even a three to four times increase. In order to provide a minimum comfort for its citizens the local and central authorities took care of the water distribution system, the street network maintenance and also of assuring cleanness. From London to Istanbul, water supply was a top priority of all the big European capitals. Therefore, in the 18th century, the surface of Jassy, the capital city of Moldavia, increased constantly. Despite frequent wars, plagues and fires, the inhabitants’ number increased, forcing the Phanariote rulers to take some specific measures in order to supply running water to the city. Following the damages caused by fires and the military occupation, the rulers of Ghica, Racovita and Moruzi families invested a considerable amount of financial and human resources in order to achieve such goal. Jassy was provided with fresh water from Copou and Ciric springs. The Phanariote rulers used skilled craftsmen coming from Istanbul, but even with their input pipelines were often broken (clogged) due to the lack of care.
