Free Verse in Rhymed Form

Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the procedure that is relatively frequent in modern poetry and which consists of free verse making up traditional stanzas. From that angle the author analyses distich, tercet, quatrain, sestina and the sonnet in modern Croatian literature. The author investigates the reasons for such a procedure as well as its effects and he reaches the conclusion that the answer can be found on the semantic level of verse: rhymed verse forms made up of free verse remind the reader of traditional verse forms consisting of rhymed verse, while the associations raised by such verse contribute to the construction of the significance of the poem. This tendency also testifies to the awareness of the importance of tradition and it is a symptom of doubts concerning modernism.
