Summary/Abstract: a reply to E.P. Thompson, “Comment,” Praxis International 5, No. 1 (1985): 75-85. If we feel the need to answer Thompson, it is not only because we refuse to be misrepresented by him, but because we believe the differences between us might be instructive even in the present context. Whether we can make a contribution to an ongoing debate depends, of course, on an audience that is able to deal with genuine disagreement. This unfortunately is not the case for E. P. Thompson. His reply to us is marred by manipulative rhetoric and unfounded accusations.1 All of this is calculated to purge those who disagree with him out of any legitimate universe of discourse.
