Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to demonstrate the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as an instrument of sustainability transition. Sustainability transition means a transformation of the economic and socio-technical system towards more environmentally sustainable and socially equitable. The current scope of implementation of CSR in business is insufficient. CSR should cover the important aspects of the business and its impact on society and the environment and be part of a multilevel governance, supporting the sustainability transition. The authors have made a literature overview of the most popular understanding of sustainability transition. Then the description of the role of various actors in the necessary transformation of the economy has been made. Finally a changing role and a new range of business activities has been showed within the framework of their corporate social responsibility. The article uses the multilevel perspective created by F.W. Geels effective in the analysis of the transformation of complex systems.
