Summary/Abstract: Television seems to be a convenient medium to promote books and readership. In Polish public television, besides programmes dedicated specifically to books, news programmes also attempt to arouse public interest in reading. Since 2005, every Wednesday the popular news programme “Teleexpress” has been presenting special features dedicated to promotion of books (“Teleexpressowy przedział lieracki”). The article attempts to answer the question of how books are promoted in these weekly features. The analysis is based on episodes from the years 2005 to 2007. Despite limited time (approximately one minute), every episode involved simple yet efficient promotion of books and readership. The structure of each episode consisted of three parts: statements made by the host of “Teleexpress”, comments made by narrator and remarks by the author of the book in question. The programme is designed for general public and presents mainly light prose and popular writers. Its main objective is to encourage the viewers to read books.
