THE SPATIAL REPRESENTATION IN ITALIAN AND FRENCH: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DEMONSTRATIVES AND ADVERBS OF PLACE

Summary/Abstract: This paper is based on a comparative and diachronic study of a corpus of issues of Topolino (Italian edition) and Le Journal de Mickey (French edition) from the thirties to today. Our approach is a study of the use of demonstratives and adverbs of place. The results are compared to our previous studies on a corpus of contemporary graphic novels. We show a stability in the frequency of demonstrative and related adverbs of place in French and Italian, but a change in the distribution of adverbial forms which is complementary of the simplifying of demonstrative forms. The guillaumian methodological framework allows us to highlight systematic and diachronic consistencies of observable speech facts referring to specific language systems.
