Summary/Abstract: Since there is no perfect overlap between tongues, translation can be viewed as an attempt, more or less successful, to reproduce the meaning of a text, or a process of re-semantisation, i.e. a new actualization of the message, of the intrinsic content of discourse, by means of new signs. Focusing on the kinetics of the signified of the noun, in some passages taken from a novel by Patricia Grace, will reveal the varying treatment, in English and in French, of the extensity of the noun by determiners, responsible for the effects of discourse. This study will also demonstrate that the material operative genesis or the relationship between the sayable and the uttered may be altered, and that the entireness of the process potentiality/effect or representation/expression may be questioned
