Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the authors discuss the development of the environmental rights of citizens, in the context of human rights. The authors also discuss the theoretical assumptions and the importance of environmental law as well as the connection between environmental and modern environmental policy. Also, the authors explain the key elements of environmental law, and the degree of the EU standards in this field and the possibility of their application in the acceding countries. Special attention was paid to the importance of environmental law in a democratic system. Therefore, the authors consider environmental law from two perspectives - as a way to improve environmental protection and improvement of environmental policy on the one hand, but also as a way to influence and control power on the other hand, according to the reached European standards.
