Summary/Abstract: Paper assesses the involvement of different industrial sectors in Podlaskie Voivodeship in innovation activities with the aim to identify those that show above-average performance in this field. It was hypothesized that low-tech and medium-low-tech sectors are the dominant players in innovation activity of the region’s industry. Two indicators of relative innovative performance were used: one relating innovative performance of each sector to the average of the whole region’s industry, and the other – to the average innovation performance of a given sector in Poland. For the purpose of determining relationships between variables and indicators, Pearson linear correlation was used. Statistical data were obtained from Central Statistical Office in Poland , and covered three consecutive Community Innovation Surveys (CIS): 2002–2004, 2004–2006 and 2006– 2008. It was found that innovation activity was concentrated in 5 out of 16 industrial sectors in Podlaskie, suggesting sectoral specialization in the field of innovation. Three of them were low-tech-sectors, supporting the notion of low-tech sectors dominance in innovation activity in Podlaskie.
