Summary/Abstract: I have chosen the concepts of self, family, history and law as the guiding theoretical frame for exploring the content of postcolonial South East Asian literature written in English. The question which has guided my reading is how much of the old, precolonial traditions are still reflected in the works of contemporary-mainly Indian authors writing in English, and to what extent they conceptualize their work within the framework of eastern literary concepts and traditions. Therefore the article will have a first part introducing the theoretical concepts and the background of indian and near-Eastern history and traditions, and an applicative part, analysis of several novels.
