Summary/Abstract: Today the efficient transfer of information between people speaking different languages in a global alert world depends more and more on a good translation. That is why a significant part of the plans of the publishing houses is reserved for translations. The desire to have access to knowledge and enjoyment of other cultures is perhaps greater with the Romanians than with other peoples, a remarkable piece of evidence being the large number of published translations, and the existence of several official versions, all of high quality, of the great texts from the world literature. Translation is not a ‘copy’ of a book in another language, but a ‘rewriting’ of the book in another language. One cannot assume this responsibility unless one has a skill in handling language, even talent, quite similar to the author. In order to be credible and ‘catch’ the message, the author’s ideas, the translator should be interested in the world the author speaks about in his/her work. Without exception, the translation is not identical to the original. It may be more modest or better written than the original, may cover all the ideas presented at the first level of reading, but it cannot entirely follow this original subtext and intertext. And this is true not only about written translations. In other words, a translation is an artistic adaptation, taking into account the context. In the complex and complicated world in which we have come to live, to interact as individuals or community, the factor ‘context’ becomes important. A wrong perception of the context in communication can generate a whole chain of misunderstandings which, like a vicious circle, can cause undesirable situations. Thus, the phenomenon we are dealing with, that of translation, is affected by the invoked reality.
