Summary/Abstract: Constructing an oral discourse: between reformulation and translation. When French speaking children aged 4 to 10 retell a story that they have just heard, they do it in 3 different ways: they repeat the source utterance (SU), modify the meaning of the SU, or produce an utterance which is semantically equivalent to the SU. The third procedure is more complex than the other two and is quite similar to the translation of an utterance, since children produce the same meaning with other linguistic forms. The way children produce paraphrastic reformulations is the most important way they acquire not only the meaning of source utterances but also the paraphrastic possibilities that the mother tongue allows.
