Summary/Abstract: The Old Armory building on Liteiny Prospect was erected in the middle of the 18th century and stood until 1929. In the annals of Russian architecture, Vasily Bazhenov was credited with the design of the facility. Documents found in an archive have allowed us to determine that the architect was in fact Johann Valentine Tobias von Didrichstein. He worked in St. Petersburg on a three-year contract beginning in 1762. Karl Spekle saw the construction through to completion based on von Dietrichstein’s plans. This research helped to uncover the role of little-known architects and how construction was organized in the era of Catherine the Great.
