Genre theory in the "Umjetnost riječi"

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the most important contributions on genre theory in the "Word Art" since its beginnings in 1957. An assessment is made of the importance of genre theory in the editorial policy of the review in the course of last three decades. The differing approach to the study of literary kinds and genres is illustrated through the works of Skreb, Solar, Jauß, Pavličić and several other authors. Their contributions are discussed within the framework of both national and international literary criticism. The final paragraphs of the article are concerned with few unresolved problems deriving from the concept of historic changeability of generic structures and the need for classification of literary forms; which have been strongly advocated by contribu tors to the review in the past.
