Summary/Abstract: The text examines the problem of the present state of the institution ‘art gallery’ in Bulgaria from the point of view of the interrelations between the different types of art galleries -the National Art Gallery, the larger and smaller regional galleries. In spite of all the wanderings and difficulties of the prolonged ‘transition which the country has experienced, today the Bulgarian galleries are facing the necessity to reexamine the very basis for their existence and to look for the social aspects of their presence. The Balchik Art Gallery is examined as an ex ample of the attempt of a small gallery to leave the vicious circle of futile accumulation of art objects and the mechanisms which had secured it during the past decades.
