Academician Petko Staynov’s contribution to the development of ecology law

Summary/Abstract: Academician Petko Staynov’s ideas on preservation of the environment reach beyond the framework of legal positivism and this places him among the pioneers of Environmental Law both in Bulgaria and in Europe. His contributions can be delineated in three main groups. Firstly, justification for overcoming the legal positivism and the study of Environmental Law in its social context. Secondly, the creation of a comprehensive system of legal protection of the main components of the ecosystem, singling out a rich variety of legal and other instruments. Thirdly, the application of modern instruments in the research of biodiversity and the combined application of national law with the standards of international law.
