Summary/Abstract: The subject of this study are punitive damages, their nature and scope of application in the Bulgarian legal system. Their main purpose is to punish the delinquent for his illicit behavior. Traditionally punitive damages are associated with the common law legal system but they exist and are used in the Romano-Germanic legal system. Their primary application is in the field of tort liability but have potential to be applied in other fields.
