Summary/Abstract: An analysis of topics of dissertation theses submitted at the respective faculties of humanities provides an interesting insight into the character and development of academic disciplines. The article presents an overview of the differences between the German and Czech tradition of English studies at Charles University and German University in Prague in the years 1912–1939. The focus is on the variation in the number and topics of dissertation theses written by students of both faculties in the context of contemporary doctoral examination regulations.
