From Informal to Illegal: Social(ist) Housing for Roma in Sofia

Summary/Abstract: This paper outlines some preliminary findings of a larger, ongoing study of the changing housing regime during Bulgaria's transition from socialism to post-socialism, with a special focus on the Bulgarian Roma minority and the city of Sofia. Starting from the current era and working my way back, I discuss some of the socialist government’s policies toward housing for people in need, and trace the legacy of these policies after the end of state socialism.
