Summary/Abstract: In the past several years, a growing number of young people from Sofia and other big cities in Bulgaria and abroad have purchased or rented property in remote villages or rural neighborhoods throughout Bulgaria, with the aim of moving there permanently and, even more, with the idea of leading lives they have designed themselves. In stark contrast to the local village youth, who leave peasant life for better opportunities in the big cities in Bulgaria and elsewhere, these young people subscribe to the ideas of creating life, subsistence, and relationships alternative to big city life and consumerism, and “independent from the changing social, religious and political systems”
