Summary/Abstract: Shadow economy is a phenomenon occurring in every economy all over the world. Determinants and the scale of the phenomenon depend on conditions in a given economy. The phenomenon of shadow economy is controversial and difficult to analyse mainly because of intention to stay unregistered. In the determinants of shadow economy we can distinguish the groups of economic, social, political and institutional factors. The aim of the article is the analysis of the influence of formal and informal institutions into the scope of shadow economy in Poland. The starting point is the review of definitions of shadow economy and institutions. Secondly, formal and informal institutional determinants are identified. In the next part the analysis of the identified determinants is performed on the basis of results of direct and indirect research. Particularly useful are World Bank, European Commission, Central Statistical Office, World Values Survey Association data. The sources were books, journals, reports and statistics published in English and Polish.
