Summary/Abstract: Thе article considers the participation of the Cossacks of the Far East of Russia, who belonged to the Transbaikal, Amur and Ussuri Cossack hosts, in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. This military conflict became one of the first true challenges of combat capabilities of the Far Eastern Cossacks since the creation of these hosts in the second half of the 19th century. The author cites data about the mobilized combatant forces of the hosts and the number of the Cossacks of the region who took part in operations. The article lists the main military operations and battles in which the Cossacks of the Far East truly excelled; it gives the general characteristic of the participation of the Cossacks of the region in this military campaign. Special attention is paid to the socio-economic aspects of the participation of the Cossacks in the war with Japan. The author analyzes losses in the Cossack households caused by necessity to buy all the required military ammunition at their own expense and the draft of the majority of the able-bodied men with their own horses to war for a long time. Besides that, the article considers measures of state support for the Cossacks who went up the line. Based on this data the author concludes that the financial position of the Far Eastern Cossacks was in an immensely poor state, which was caused by the wars with China in 1900–1901 and Japan in 1904–1905. This resulted in dissatisfaction of the Cossacks of the Far East with their economic and social situation, which later led to their active participation in the revolution of 1905–1907.
