Summary/Abstract: The historical encounters of Islamic and the Western cultures on European soil, have been of different kinds, ranging from those aiming at cultural exchange and cooperation to those characterised by hatred and open conflict. In this century, there has been a culmination of Islamophobia, negative perceptions of Muslims, xenophobia, terrorist attacks and an incomprehension of the “West”. The main topic of this text is how these encounters and the incomprehension happen and mutually feed the antagonisms and so deepen the distance – based on the example of the Prophet Muhammed – and also where in all of this is the role of civil society, specifically the NGO’s motivated by religious values which operate on European soil.
