Summary/Abstract: In this article, we aim to examine the multidimensional nature of the political instability in developing countries and to derive new measures of political instability. To this end, we use a principal components analysis on a set of 25 indicators of political instability for 114 developing countries. We arrived to detect four dimensions of political instability, namely; the level of democracy, violence and politically motivated protest, the effects of neighboring countries, and instability in government.
