Summary/Abstract: The Capital of Moldavia was the only town in the Kingdom where two emblematic historical monuments were restored: the Three Hierarch Church, the Saint Nicholas Princely Church. The two churches in Iasi were part of the much too short list of restoration works conducted in the second half of the nineteenth century, next to Curtea de Argeș, the Metropolitan’s residence in Târgoviște and the Saint Demetrius Church in Craiova. All these interventions, which met with violent opposition in the public space, were coordinated by a foreign architect, Lecomte de Noüy. Blasphemed and equally admired, a ferment for original passions in the local architectural landscape, rightfully considered by many a ‘spoiled foreigner’, Lecomte de Noüy was one of the most important specialists involved in the art of restoration of Romanian monuments in the first decades of the nineteenth century.
