Summary/Abstract: The present paper reports the research conducted on the mechanisms of the cardiovascular diseases, with focus on the myocardial infarction – diseases responsible for the largest number of sudden deaths worldwide. Statistics show that, each year, myocardial infarction is the cause of half of all the demises in the world and of 4.5 million deaths in Europe. The animal model of the myocardial infarction plays a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of the human myocardial infarction. The experimental myocardial infarction in animals induced by means of isoprenaline is a documented, common mechanism that enables one to study of the protective role of various cardioprotecting agents. Many studies have shown so far the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Hedera helix on diverse apparatuses and systems, yet not on the cardiovascular apparatus too. That has prompted us to test the cardioprotective role of the Hedera helix extract in experimental myocardial ischemia induced by isoprenaline. The 14-day long experimental laboratory research consisted in specific methods applied to several groups of rats. The present paper reports the results and conclusions being reached. In the future we intend to have the effect of Hedera helix tested on humans too.
