Summary/Abstract: During earthworks connected with the investment task called “Rebuilding of Kościuszko Square surface” the bones of Soviet Army soldiers were discovered. The soldiers died in January 1945 during battles fought in the area of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Human bones were found in one of two air-raid trenches hidden under the surface of Kościuszko Square and built probably in 1944. The exploration of the interior of the air-raid trench allowed to uncover 53 skeletons in two rows along the sidewall that was parallel to the shelter walls. On the basis of the discovered objects and belongings placed by the skeletons, it was possible to identify the bodies buried in the shelter as the soldiers of the Soviet Army who died in the Tomaszów battle in 1945. Until today it has not been explained why the bodies of 53 Soviet soldiers were left in an anti raid trench and it probably needs more source research. So far no archival documents have been found which would explain the issue. The bones of the exhumed Soviet soldiers were buried in the Orthodox cemetery at Smutna street in Tomaszów Mazowiecki on 11 June 2014.
