Summary/Abstract: It is argued that “typical and sticky patterns of Otherness” shape Edirne, the first Ottoman capital in Europe. This Otherness lies less in the amazing Selimiye complex alone than in the elder monuments and (proto-Bektaşi) traditions. The leading arguments are based on considerations concerning urbanity and human geography which characterize Edirne as part of the Eurasian Ottoman core. The examination shows that this old core-tradition inherent to Edirne and based on religiously motivated fighting spirit was conserved in an atmosphere of provinciality during the 400 years lasting pax ottomanica and revived in the late 19th century on the background of fundamental political, economic and social change that affected the Ottoman Empire and Edirne in particular.
