IN HONOUR OF PROF. DR. SEVİM AKTEN

Summary/Abstract: Sevim Akten’s academic life started in 1968 at the Department of French Language and Literature, Faculty of Letters, Atatürk University, from which she retired in 2011. Her 43-year-long academic life comprises various courses taught and a great number of academic studies published on issues related to education, literature and translation. Following on the footsteps of Prof. Dr. Bedrettin Tuncel, her doctoral thesis advisor, and Prof. Dr. Tahsin Yücel, her Associate Professorship Jury Member, she has herself become a source of inspiration for her students and many young researchers with her vast knowledge and experience. A modest, honest and hardworking scientist, she produced studies on various aspects of French philology, sharing her knowledge and experience with her undergraduate and graduate students, and fellow academics. She received an honour award at the 8th National Francophonie Congress, held at Namık Kemal University on the 16the – 18th of May, 2012, for her enormous contribution to the development of French studies and Francophonie organizations in Turkey. We, as Humanitas editors, as well as her colleagues and above all her students, are happy to commemorate and express our sincere respect and cordiality, and above all our gratitude to Sevim Akten on her 70th birthday with this special issue of our Journal. With regards to her professional and academic life, the following aspects would be highly revelatory. Sevim Akten was born on the 15th of September, 1945, in Bayburt. She graduated from the Department of French Language and Literature at Atatürk University in 1968. She started to work as a research assistant at this university following her graduation in the same year. In 1970, she started her doctoral studies at the University of Aix-en Provence as a scholarship student which was granted to her by the French government. In 1974, she finished her doctoral thesis, entitled Elite Problematic in Georges Duhamel and focused on the issue of the place of the elites in society. Her doctoral advisor, Prof. Dr. Bedrettin Tuncel, the former Head of the Department of French Language and Literature, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Ankara University, emphasized the value of the study, claiming that: “I would like to point out that this is one of the best theses I have supervised and examined in my whole career”. In 1980, Sevim Akten continued her professional endeavours into French studies by embarking on post-doctorate research at Clemont-Ferrand University for a year. The year of 1984 represents the beginning of her most productive period, her translations and original works being published in various periodicals, such as Çağdaş Eleştiri, Argos, Frakofoni, Varlık, and Tömer. Sevim Akten received the title of Associate Professor in 1991 based in part on her research of Marguerite Duras’ novels following the theoretical and methodological strategies of narrative analysis developed by Gérard Genette and Tahsin Yücel. In 1993, she was assigned as a Jury Member for Doctoral Thesis Defence at Aix-en Provence University. The following year, she was invited, this time by the French Government, to participate in the conference held at Sorbonne University. She was also invited as Guest Professor at the Theatre Festival at Monastere University in the same year. In 1996, she became a Full Professor at Atatürk University. Sevim Akten harmoniously combined all throughout her career the academic, teaching and administrative activities. She held the position of the Head of the Department of French Language and Literature from 1985 to 2001 and from 2008 to 2011. She was also appointed Assistant Manager of the Institute of Social Sciences from 1992 to 2001 and as a Board Member at the same institute from 1996 to 2001. She was also the Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Atatürk University between 2001 and 2008. Uninterruptedly throughout her entire academic career writing scientific books and articles, and translating and supervising Master and Doctoral theses, Sevim Akten retired in 2011, but to the present continues to be a strong academic presence in our country. Along with Prof. Dr. Tahsin Yücel, Prof. Dr. Sevim Akten contributed enormously to the implementation and application of structuralism, narratology and semiotics in Turkey, as she greatly contributed on the whole to the development of literary and cultural studies in our country. One behalf of all fellow academics, we are proud to offer the present issue of our Journal as an expression of high esteem and appreciation for our distinguished Professor Sevim Akten, which includes works by various Francophonie scientists as well as her colleagues, and whose studies reveal similarities of concern and method to her own. In this respect, we would like to express our gratitude to them and to everyone who assisted us in the preparation of this issue, and in particular to the Assistant Researcher Fatma Er and the Lecturer Harun Göçerler who contributed to the preparation of this issue as editorial assistants. Above all, we would like to express our gratitude to Sevim Akten for having devoted all her existence and experience to teaching, writing and academic research, and wish her a long happy life.
