Summary/Abstract: The report examines the characteristic peculiarities of the drawing in the paintings by Toma Vishanov in the churches „St Luke the Evangelist” and „The Virgin’s Canopy”, which are part of the Rila monastery complex, and in the paintings of the narthex of the church “St. John of Rila” in the Kurilo monastery. The research presented here analizes the type characteristics, proportions and plastique modelling of the naked bodies, the faces, hands, legs and drapery, the anatomy of the animals, the way of building space in the interior and exterior, as well as the perspective. The style of drawing is compared to that of the founder of the Samokov School of painting, Hristo Dimitrov. It is thus that the plastique approach in the drawing style of Toma Vishanov and his means of expression are clearly set out. With his style, he is in fact one of those Bulgarian artists who accepted the authentic Baroque features in their purest form. He was an innovator, a predecessor of changes in Bulgarian art which were to be generally adopted much later. That is the reason why his style of drawing remained unappreciated by his contemporaries. Toma Vishanov - the first representative of the Bansko School of painting - was probably the most innovative, modern and distinct artist of his time.
