Summary/Abstract: "The Language of the Label" is a term paper for a course in sociolinguistics taught by Assoc. Prof. Borislav Gueorguiev at the New Bulgarian University. It analyses the initial stage of written codification of a functional variety of the Bulgarian language used by the hip-hop community related with Sniper Records company, as it appears in the HOKAYT magazine. Following the SPEAKING model proposed by Dell Hymes in 1972, the sociological and communicative situations are presented. The main focus is the occurrence of bilingualism and di-graphy in the magazine compared to similar phenomena in the written language of other Bulgarian sub-cultural groups such as gamers and chatters. At the end of the paper an attempt is made to fit the language variety under consideration into Dell Hymes’s sociolinguistic typology, leading to proposed two new concepts: para-pidgin and para-creole languages applicable to languages spoken by various sub-cultural groups.
