Technology and innovation in Polish industrial sys- tem

Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article is the assessment of the infl uence of technological advancement of companies on the innovation activity in the Polish Industrial System. The author attempts to answer three fundamental questions: fi rst, whether subjects from the area of low and medium-low technologies are signifi cantly more innovative than other enterprises, or their importance is overvalued, secondly, has the sector of high technologies in Poland achieved the critical mass of the self-sustaining development of innovations, and thirdly, does the innovation activity in the industrial system depend – in line with the evolutionary perspective – on the intermediate technologies, as Poland does not belong neither to the most or less developed countries? The main aim of the study is to indicate directions and impact powers of the technology advancement on the innovation activity of companies in the national industrial system. The methodical part of the study is prepared based on the probit modelling based on the probability theory. It is found that the key to acceleration of the innovation development in Poland is the stimulation of this activity mostly in the medium-high technologies. The high-tech sector reached the critical mass of the self-sustaining generation of innovations, however, its systemic importance is signifi cantly lower than the former one. On the other side, the sector of low technologies systemically weakens the innovation activity of the industry in Poland. At this stage of the economic development, involvement in the innovation processes evolves towards high technologies, with strong concentration in the medium-high technologies industries, which should be in the center of interest of the national innovation policy.
