Summary/Abstract: In this study we examined foreign news published in the Stur ́s biweekly paper OROL TA- TRÁNSKI ('The Tatra Eagle') in terms of formal structure, content focus, the upholding of professional ethical standards in the process of content creation, and, ultimately, also the application of the so-called 'theory of news values', which concerns how the thematic focus of news is selected. We analysed all three volumes of the periodical, published from 1845 until 1848, which altogether entailed 251 stories printed in the section Rozlicnosti ('Miscellanea'). The reference points in our investigation were the theoretical pri- nciples of news reporting and writing, professional ethical standards and theory of news values, as well as findings from relevant documents accepted at various international fora.
