Summary/Abstract: The article examines the motif of sacral cephalofory in the doctrinal context of Christian ideology and his role in the legends about the death of the „last” mediaeval Bulgarian ruler. Interest represents the „use” of motif for sacralization of Ivan Shishman’s fi gure from the point of view of national constructive dynamics during 19th Century. „The attachment” of the motif to narratives about tsar’s death it’s significant for his function of interpretative code toward the events of the past. The analysis shows the active interaction between oral and written tradition and also the influence of the 19th century literature and press for updating, formatting and deducting of the collective notions.
