Summary/Abstract: Slang Among Young People. Our lexicological study deals with a vivid linguistic phenomenon that characterizes the present-day oral French language, which enjoys multiple denominations, but which we preferred to call slang (Fr. argot) according to the name of its predecessor, the hermetic language of a few groups of initiates. The analysis proceeds from the mutations that French slang suffered over time, highlighted in the diachronic analysis of its different definitions, and then shifts its focus on the current characteristics of this colourful language of the young, by dismissing some of the multitude of viewpoints that have been circulating around it. The study aims at drawing the line between French slang and the terms that have been raised in relation with it and at eventually establishing whether it can indeed be considered as a language per se, and not merely as a language register.
