Summary/Abstract: Drinking coffee was, in European space, as similar to Arab countries, initially understood as a medication for various troubles, only later did new forms of social life at homes come about, along with drinking coffee – specialized catering facilities – coffee houses. . They experienced the greatest gowth in Slovenia in the beginning of the 20th century, when many elite coffee houses appeared, following the Vienna model. Coffee houses were not only facilities for enjoying coffee – the 'wine of the Arab world', but also a significant factor of social and cultural life. By their inclina- tion and by visitors, they were divided into liberally and clerically oriented ones, as well as into those frequented by Germans and the pro-German inclined in contrast to the Slovenian, i.e. pro-Yugoslav inclined. In spite of the seeming openness and toler- ant atmosphere in coffee houses, we may conclude that Maribor coffee houses before Wold War II were primarily points of association for the social elite.
