PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS: ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE FAMILY

Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the various kinds of violence experienced by children, but special attention is paid to the subject of sexual violence. The problem of sexual violence is not just limited to symptoms which negatively affect the functioning of the individual for many years. Sexual abuse causes the young mind to associate sexuality with brutal aggression and this in turn leads to ingrained destructive attitudes and patterns of behaviour. Private Conversations is enriched by the contributions of an adult who during childhood was sexually abused by someone in their immediate environment. However the aim of the author was not to shock her readers with the accounts she presents, rather she wants to enable us all to “look beyond what we can see” and perceive the problems experienced by children who hide their personal tragedies. Only then will we be able to help those children free themselves from their traumatic experiences and memories.
